Adult's biological meaning means an animal capable of reproducing. When used with humans, the term "adult" could mean anything that is related to legal or social notions. In contrast to "minor" as well as "non-adult" an legal adult is an individual who has achieved an age at which they are majority. They are thought to be competent, responsible and independent. The word "major" can be used to define these individuals. The age at which a child becomes an adult legally is 18; however, the definition of maturity is different based on the country or legal system in place, and also the psychological condition of the child.

The age of adulthood marks the point that the person is at maturity both in mental and physical development. The age of adulthood typically begins at the age of 21. Middle age, commencing approximately 40 years of age then follows by an ageing process that can last up to 60 years old. As we grow older, there are three distinct phases early adulthood (18-30 years), Middle Adulthood (30-60 years) and finally, late adulthood (60%-60 percent). The early adulthood stage is the one of physical maturity that is at the time we turn 20 to 40 years aged. Our height and weight can, however, slightly grow. As we enter our early adulthood, our physical abilities are at their peak which includes muscle strength, reaction time, sensory abilities, and the functioning of our heart.
