Katarina Wit started skating when she was five. Her talent soon were evident and she was accepted into Karl-Marx-Stadt's special school. This was where she met her coach Jutta Muller. Witt had her first breakthrough year in 1982 after she finished second at the World Championships held in Copenhagen. Since then, Witt's elegance and grace have caught all the attention of people. Olympic success Katarina (now Witt) won the Women's Figure Skating gold medal at Sarajevo in the Sarajevo Winter Games. Witt won an even more close competition after four years. The free skater was unable to win however, she took home the gold medal for the mandatory figures and her short programme. Witt is the only female figure skater to win the same competition twice, in the same year since Sonja Heine. Hall of Fame After enjoying success as an actress, Witt returned to the sport to compete at the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Games. People were captivated by her performance despite the fact that she placed seventh. Witt was admitted to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in the year 1995.
